The Gin
Mill Restaurant & Tavern on San Mateo was the first
Albuquerque food establishment to receive the prestigious award for excellence
in food safety.
is a program which promotes higher levels of food safety,
dining standards, and operation procedures.
In order for a restaurant
to receive this award they must technically prove their commitment to food
safety through training, education, and by implementing quality controls
such as "Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point" (HACCP), a high quality
food safety procedure.
The award program was instituted in conjunction
with the New Mexico Restaurant Association, Rio Grande Valley Chefs'
Federation, and the City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department.
The Albuquerque Journal Business Outlook,
dated December 1, 1997, had this to say about the Gin
Mill Restaurant & Tavern at 6300 San Mateo Blvd NE:
"The Gin Mill Restaurant
& Tavern prides itself in being a 'neighborhood' establishment
... that has a steady lunch clientele as well as the happy hour drinking
crowd.
One patron,a...businessman...emphasized the Gin
Mill is not a sports bar, but games carried on the major networks
are shown... Another patron,a...businesswoman...said... 'It's a comfortable
bar for a woman, especially a single woman... it's very safe and comfortable..."
The Albuquerque Tribune,
dated December 12, 1997, had this to say about our local pub:
"...The Gin Mill is still that
place we think of first when we want a friendly smile, a great burger, a
monster salad, or those marvelous turkey enchiladas...
...The
Gin Mill is also famous for its
two-for-one huevos rancheros brunch special from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. Saturday
and Sunday, when you can get two plates piled with eggs, your choice
of searing red or green chile, beans, gooey cheese, fried potatoes, posole
and tortilla..."
And
again, the Albuquerque Journal, dated January 6, 1998,
wrote this about our food:
"Some of the best
turkey enchiladas in town don't come from a Mexican restaurant. They
come from The Gin Mill ...on San Mateo ...a
bustling two level restaurant-tavern of wood and brass ...a pub in the British
tradition.
Tom's Turkey Enchiladas...is one of those dishes that
becomes an occasional must-have staple in the diet ...The dish is a sprawling
stack of two corn tortillas, cheese, big hunks of meat that taste like turkey
rather than some dried out former fowl, and a well-seasoned, well-fired
green chile sauce that pulls the whole thing together with a tasteful singe..."
